REPTILIAN. THE WORD EVOKES PREHISTORIC MYSTERY, AN OTHERWORLDLINESS, A COLD BLOODED FAMILY OF CREATURES + ULTIMATELY, FEAR. WE'VE BEEN RAISED TO SEE THESE SLITHERY, SILENT + STEALTHY BEINGS, AS THE ENEMY.
Perhaps this is why these animals don't always rate in the conscience of consumers. The truth however, is that many of the 'exotic' skin styles that are seen in fashion (shoes + bags in particular), come from wild animals, that have been caught + skinned in horrific ways - in dirty streets, with no stunning or anaesthetic, or even a thought for animal welfare principles. For the record, animal welfare principles are simply rules that industry has put in place to allow us to continue to exploit animals - yet market fairness + supposed respect for the animal, to the world.
We don't believe that animals need to be exploited, in order to admire + wear the inspiration that we see in the colouring + texture of their skin. Humans have always been fascinated by the animal, funghi + plant kingdoms - yet we took a wrong turn thousands of years ago when we decided to dominate, versus living alongside our fellow earthlings, in harmony.
We will always talk about + promote going faux. We don't believe it's a negative word - indeed, 'real' when it comes to animal products, is associated with so much pain, trauma, cruelty + exploitation, we challenge the validity of 'real' being the superior option.
Here are our picks for going faux. We know it will be an eternal trend, as inspiration from our non human earthlings will always turn our head; yet let's make it about mimicking nature, versus killing it.
Faux crocodile + alligator have been a part of the Sans Beast range since day 1 + more recently we have added faux lizard + faux python to our collection.
Of all our cruelty free reptilian variations, faux snakeskin is the boldest. Have a look at our faux versions of python in the Khaki Lobby + the Tutu Pink Salon. Maybe it's the chameleonic nature of the animal kingdom, but despite the pop tones in these materials - they work as a coloured neutral in your wardrobe; they blend with a variety of outfit choices. If you’re daring, pair a faux snakeskin piece with a different pattern. Go for clash, pattern + colour play.
If you’re looking for a classic, look no further than faux crocodile or alligator. What is the difference you may ask? Actually, not much - in the land of faux (for the living creatures, it's all about the snout) - but for us, the alligator fabric has a subtle patent surface + we've trimmed it with gunmetal (grey) hardware, and the crocodile is more matte + trimmed with gold hardware. It’s a subtle difference but if you know you know.
As they’re a signature part of our range you’ll find these fabrics across the majority of our styles, however those of you looking for a timeless piece need look no further than Noir.
A personal favourite of mine is the Noir Salon Crossbody Bag. We launched this piece with Series 6. It’s cute, compact + chic. A triple threat.
Chestnut Lizard also works incredibly well as a tonal piece. Check out The Creature blog post where we chat with Karissa Sparke + see how she styled her Lobby + Corridor combo. Effortless yet impactful.
As always, we continue to encourage you to express your style + creativity the cruelty free way. The revolution awaits you.
LOVE, STUDIO SANS BEAST.
