Text reads Fashion Revolution Week, with an overlay of the 'Coastline' typeface created by Johan Elmehag

April 24th, 2023 marks 10 years since the devastating collapse of the Rana Plaza in Dhaka, Bangladesh, killing 1132 people + injuring more than 2500.  From this preventable catastrophe, Fashion Revolution was born.  This week + always, we are #RememberingRanaPlaza.

Fashion Revolution 2023 is 22-29 April. The theme for 2023 is Manifesto for a Fashion Revolution. You can read all about it here

We're looking forward to marking the week in our own way.  We will be highlighting our manufacturing partners - be it the fabric, hardware or handbag makers.  There are so many facets that go into making a bag - many hands make the pieces in our wardrobes + often these hands (and faces) are absent from brand storytelling.  The world loves a runway, a fashion shoot, an interview with a designer - yet makers are central to the process + commonly overlooked.  We only work with Sedex audited makers to ensure social compliance is in place, fair + living wages are upheld, insurance is covered where appropriate, environments are safe + the right to negotiate with management, are all embedded facets in the workplace.

We applaud Fashion Revolution for championing the rights of workers + environmental health, yet we wish to add to this ethical conversation + ensure that non human animals are also deeply considered when contemplating the impact the fashion industry has.  The plight of billions of animals is often ignored by consumers, largely through the lack of transparency around animal breeding, raising + slaughter. No one should suffer for fashion - and for us, this includes non human animals.  Be it skins, scales, feathers, fur or fluids - we don't use anything that is derived from animals in our brand.  We believe animals are here with us, not for us.

We’ll be sharing stories + information throughout the week, finishing the week with a super exciting upcycling project with IntoCarry.

For now, an update on our giving approach for the next 7 days.

From the birth of Sans Beast, we’ve donated to Edgars Mission Animal Sanctuary with every purchase you’ve made.  Since April 2021, we’ve also planted a tree with One Tree Planted, with every purchase.  For the week of Fashion Revolution, we’re expanding our donation pool.  For every purchase made, we’ll be giving $5 to Edgars Mission + $5 to Fashion Revolution.

We hope you'll follow along for the week as we roll out our Fashion Revolution updates.

Thanks for being here, vive la revolution.

P.S. If you look closely at the text in the above image, you'll notice a 'squiggly' overlay in the Fashion Revolution heading. It's the 'Coastline' typeface, created by Johan Elmehag + introduced by Fashion Revolution this year, with letters shaped as vulnerable coastal areas around the world would look if all the ice melted.

We love this clever use of design to communicate the global impact of the climate crisis + we encourage you to read more about Johan Elmehag's Coast to Coast, Shore to Shore project.
