Our Story

The brand came to life on the runways of VAMFF in March 2018, and have fast established a loyal following of style seeking, animal loving aficionados.  Sans Beast donates $1 from every purchase to the animal rescue sanctuary Edgar's Mission, plants a tree with One Tree Planted + donates monthly to Sea Shepherd.

Did you know there are 70 billion animals slaughtered yearly for our food and/or fashion consumption?  There is a commonly held view that leather is a by-product of the food industry.  In fact, it is considered a profitable co-product.  In addition, many animals are raised purely for their hides.  And for those raised for food + fashion materials, their lives are often filled with pain, suffering, fear + loss.  We know this information does not resonate with everyone - there is a disconnect between the animals we cuddle + the animals we eat + wear.  At Sans Beast however, we make collections for those who do care about the animals.  We created the brand with the sole purpose of delivering pieces that had beauty - without the beast.

We believe there is a need for more choice in the quality fashion space - an alternative to products derived from animals. Designed with credibility, manufactured with quality. Collectable, functional, accessibly priced + designed with love.

We've written much on this subject in our Creative Journal - and also encourage anyone wanting to learn more to head to Collective Fashion Justice, where you can find fact based reporting to inspire + educate.

We appreciate you being here with us as we build this Sans Beast world.

Sans Beast was established by Cathryn Wills in May 2017.  After working in Australian fashion retail for nearly 30 years, with over a decade of that chapter spent living and breathing the world of leather handbags, Wills progressively recognised a disconnect between her professional role and her ethical stance on animal welfare and the environment.  After a chapter of research + development, Sans Beast officially launched in March 2018.

"The brand was created with the purpose of delivering pieces that had beauty - without the beast. A brand with an honest, transparent narrative - that gives back with every purchase."
