Looking for a vegan-friendly summer getaway or staycation?
We believe the best travel plans involve relaxation, inspiration and (of course) great food. Art + nature are always high on our list of holiday plans and refueling with plant-based goodness is a must. Here's our round up of vegan-friendly places to eat, stay + play around Australia these holidays - plus, the perfect travel bags to get you there in style.
Victoria
We're looking forward to checking out the 2023 NGV Triennial, taking over 4 levels of the National Gallery of Victoria with works from artists, designers + collectives from around the world, including Speculum 2019 by SMACK. The exhibition runs until 7 April + you can linger longer if visiting in January - Triennial Extra takes place over 10 evenings with free music, DJs, talks, performance, dance + more.
With your hunger for art sated, head out of the CBD to Smith + Daughters in Collingwood for their entirely plant-based menu - it's a regular SB favourite - and make sure you check out Smith + Deli next door for takeaway vegan treats.
New South Wales
Stay at the Ovolo at Woolloomooloo Bay, where you can dine at Alibi Bar + Kitchen for plant based cuisine + quirky, bold cocktails. Go for mid week drinks + vegan tacos, or opt for the super elegant vegan high tea on weekends.
Queensland
Immerse yourself in creative inspiration at Rearranged: Art of the Flower, exploring floral storytelling in textiles, ceramics, paintings + sculpture - including the stunning Look down at the ground (detail) 2016, by Monica Rohan. The inherent fragility + transience of blooms invites musings on home + migration, grief + love. On at the Museum of Brisbane until August 2024.
For traditional-made-vegan eats, try the wonderfully-named Nonna's Nightmare for Italian comfort food that's plant-based, with vegan pizza, pasta + more.
Western Australia
WA's largest arts event is on again, with an overflowing menu of comedy, music + theatre at Fringe World Perth running through Jan- Feb 2024. Stick with the live music theme at Summersalt in Denmark and try the Norfolk Hotel in Freo for a classic pub that has more than the run of the mill vegan + vegetarian options.
South Australia
Explore the collection of South Australian producers + makers at Plant 4, a market and event space with a focus on sustainability that includes vegetarian + vegan eateries. Don't miss PingAn for 100% plant based Thai food, the first in SA.
Enjoy a thoroughly luxury getaway at the Ecopia Retreat on Kangaroo Island, set amongst 150 hectares of native wilderness. Or stay in the city + check out Staazi and Co, a mobile food truck + takeaway bringing their greek vegan project to the streets of Adelaide.
Bags for Travel
Wherever you spend your leisure days this summer, we have a few recommendations for travel bags that suit every destination.
The Daytripper Tote fits a change of clothes + extras for a weekend away, and is perfect as carry on bag for a longer trip. The Xtra Overflow Tote or Traveller Tote both roll up flat to fit easily in your suitcase, ready to grab for a day at the beach, at markets + more. And the Bright Spark is our go-to crossbody bag for travel, with space for passports, phone + essentials and versatile styling options for all your holiday events.
Here's to lazy days, inspiring getaways + cruelty-free travelling.
