Responsible fashion choices that respect people, animals and our planet should be the norm, not a trend. We share some thoughts + tips for being a more conscious consumer this festive season (and beyond). We wish you the happiest of festive seasons + a beautiful 2020 ahead.
After meeting Sydney based artist Alisha Rich, through IG (where so many creative convos start nowadays...), we commissioned two paintings to underpin the waterflow feeling of Series 04. We chatted about her practise, what it is about watercolour that resonates + why rebellion against the status quo is at the centre of her approach to creative living.
CW has been in London + Europe for a few weeks, talking with inspiring people, getting the mood of retail + street style, seeking out plant based options along the road to share with the SB community back here in Melbourne + attending the Copenhagen Fashion Summit. Read her take on the Summit here.
Happy 1st Birthday to us! A reflection on the year that was, as Sans Beast turns one. Read about our highs + lows - and ultimately, our happiness + gratitude, in arriving at our first birthday in one piece, ready to embrace what's next.
IN CONVERSATION: ELLA MURPHY, STYLIST + CREATIVE DIRECTOR.
By Cathryn Wills
Ella discusses creative direction, her dog Bobby, going off the grid and how she stays inspired. We have worked with Ella on two campaigns, and both times she has brought creativity + energy to the project. She has a unique style, with an enormous talent for nailing an eclectic yet effortless look.
From day 1 of Sans Beast, we wanted to ensure we were walking our talk by committing to animal welfare in a tangible way. We donate the gross profits from the sales of bag charms to animal rescue sanctuary, Edgars Mission. The sanctuary is open to visitors + is a delightful day trip for anyone visiting or living in Melbourne. You will learn from the caring + knowledgeable volunteers + staff at Edgars Mission + be inspired by the non human residents of this peaceful property.
We asked musician Holly Rankin (aka Jack River) + Jess Cochrane to share some of their thoughts on the environment, the human condition, the future + quite simply, how they respond to the noise, through their creativity. We came away from these chats inspired + uplifted. Art + music are two powerful mediums for human connection - we could all do with more of these in our lives.
INSPIRATION: SERIES 04 SHOOT, THE AFTERGLOW OF MUTINY.
By Cathryn Wills
Welcome to Series 04: The Afterglow of Mutiny. Read about our creative process, our collaborators + why mutiny made it into our vernacular this season. We shot this campaign in the depths of a Melbourne winter, yet somehow we got the glow going. As always, we're grateful to the collaborative crew who came together to work on this project with us. We always ask people to join the (vegan) revolution - and now more than ever, a bit of mutiny may be required.
IN CONVERSATION: ON THE ROAD, WITH INSPIRED TRAVELLERS.
By JENNIFER WILLS
Impromptu destinations, living in a van for months on end + discovering new perspectives on the road. We talk to some fascinating people about their traveling lives and share a few dream destinations for the traveller wanting to tread lightly on this earth...and escape Winter. Get that travel wishlist happening...thoughts become plans become actions.
In anticipation of International Women's Day next week on March 8th, we've pulled together some ways for you to get involved with the incredible women in your life - and to perhaps, make more connections to inspire + uplift.
A peek into our Series 3 collection + shoot - entitled 'Sensorius'. Discover how we approached the season + why Caravaggio was so important to us. Collaboration is key for any brand - and as a small business, it's even more important to make every effort (and dollar) count. We are so thankful for our collaborators - Stylist + Co-Creative Director on the shoot, Ella Murphy, Scott Newett + Jesper Hede of Cubed Studio, Xeneb Allen for H+MU, the two beauties fronting the lens Emma Hakamme + Alek Kuany.
INSPIRATION: SERIES 2 SHOOT, THE BOOK OF HARLEQUIN.
By Cathryn Wills
A peak behind the scenes of our Series 2 shoot - The Book of Harlequin. Shot by Cubed Studio, styling by Bec Cole, models Jeff Ksubi + Tora Flink, HMU Karen Burton + video Josef Gatti. This was back in 2018 - which feels like a lifetime ago. The shoot was inspired by the dreamstate of reading favourite books.
